P.K. (Pastor's Kid): A Puppet Ballet Operetta

P.K. (Pastors Kid), explores the archetype of the mermaid through Blackness, religious ritual, and Queer adolescence in a tale of love and betrayal.  The ballet follows a young girl, who struggles as her group of lifelong friends gradually falls apart. Her father, the pastor of an interracial church flounders as the congregation turns against him.The show investigates the parallels of power structures within the Christian church and the social hierarchy of middle school girls. As a retelling of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid, both the girl and her father are  reverse mermaids (fish with legs). For the past 2 ½ years I’ve have completed several residencies while working on this project; including the Chicago Puppet Lab, Dark Matter Residency at Elastic Arts, the Aquarium Gallery in New Orleans. Take a look at my artistic process, as well as some performances.
